Lake Region

Finland is known as "The Land of the Thousand Lakes". With more than 180,000 lakes, we could say that is an understatement. The Finnish Lake Region is a breathtakingly beautiful part of the country where you can find the essence of the Finnish identity in charming towns and villages surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of deep-green forests, roaring hills and glistening lakes.

The region is a nature lover’s dream painted in hues of green and blue in summer, and impossible tones of yellow and red in the autumn.

Here you enjoy many of the biggest National Parks of Finland, such as Kangasala and Koli, where you can go hiking, berry picking, camping, kayaking, sailing or swimming in its lakes. But the jewel of the crown is without a doubt Lake Saimaa, the largest lake in the country, dotted by thousand islands and home of the Saimaa ringed seal, an endangered species of sweet water seal.

Besides the nature, in this region you can also discover the majors cities of Tampere, Joensuu, Kuopio or Savonlinna, the last of which also hosts an incredible medieval castle where a popular international opera festival is held every summer.
